Objective

By the end of this lesson, Ollie will have a deeper understanding of leaves, including their different types, functions, and how to categorize them. He will also engage in creative expression through art, enhance his math skills by measuring leaves, and explore scientific concepts related to plant life.

Materials and Prep

  • Various leaves collected from outside
  • Pencil and paper for notes and sketches
  • Measuring tape or ruler (can use a string and measure it against a standard object)
  • Access to a reference book or the internet for leaf identification (if available)

Before the lesson, ensure that Ollie has collected a variety of leaves from different trees and plants in the area. Discuss with him how to safely identify and collect leaves without harming the plants.

Activities

  • Leaf Identification:

Ollie will use a reference book or online resources to identify the different types of leaves he has collected. He can create a chart listing the name of each leaf, its shape, and any unique features.

  • Leaf Art:

Using the leaves, Ollie can create a leaf collage or rubbings. He can place a leaf under a sheet of paper and gently rub a crayon over it to reveal its shape and texture. This will help him appreciate the beauty of different leaves.

  • Measuring Leaves:

Ollie can measure the length and width of his largest and smallest leaves using a ruler or measuring tape. He can then record the measurements and compare them to see how they differ.

  • Leaf Function Discussion:

Discuss with Ollie the functions of leaves, such as photosynthesis. He can write a short paragraph about why leaves are important for plants and the environment.

Talking Points

  • "What different types of leaves do you see? Can you find a round leaf and a pointy leaf?"
  • "Why do you think leaves come in different shapes and sizes? How do you think this helps the plants?"
  • "What do you notice about the colors of the leaves? Why do you think some leaves are green and others are not?"
  • "Can you tell me what you think photosynthesis means? How do you think leaves help with that?"
  • "Why is it important to collect leaves carefully? How can we protect the plants while we explore?"
  • "What was your favorite part of making the leaf art? How did it feel to create something with nature?"
  • "After measuring, which leaf was the biggest? What do you think it means for a leaf to be big or small?"
  • "How do you think leaves help animals? Can you think of any animals that might use leaves?"
