Objective
By the end of this lesson, Ollie will have a better understanding of Bateman's principles through fun activities that integrate art, English, math, and science. He will create an art piece inspired by Bateman's work, write a short story about it, solve relevant math problems, and explore scientific concepts related to the themes in Bateman's art.
Materials and Prep
- Paper (for drawing and writing)
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Ruler (for math activities)
- Timer (for timed activities)
- Books or articles about Bateman's art (if available)
Before the lesson, review some of Bateman's artwork and themes. Prepare a few math problems related to measurements and basic geometry that can be tied into the art project.
Activities
-
Art Creation:
Ollie will create an art piece inspired by Bateman's style. He can choose to draw an animal or a nature scene, using colored pencils or crayons. Encourage him to think about the colors and shapes that Bateman uses in his artwork.
-
Story Writing:
After completing the art piece, Ollie will write a short story about his artwork. He can describe what is happening in the scene he created and include any characters or animals he imagined being part of it.
-
Math Measurement:
Using a ruler, Ollie will measure the size of his artwork and calculate the area of the paper used. He can also create a simple geometric shape that represents an element in his art and find its perimeter.
-
Science Exploration:
Discuss the natural elements in Bateman's art. Ollie can research one animal or plant featured in his artwork and share interesting facts about it. This can include its habitat, diet, or any unique behaviors.
Talking Points
- "Bateman's art often shows beautiful animals and nature. What do you notice about the colors and shapes he uses?"
- "When you're creating your art, think about what story you want to tell. What is happening in your picture?"
- "Measuring your artwork is important! Can you tell me how long and wide your paper is?"
- "Did you know some animals in Bateman's art have special adaptations? What can you find out about the animal you chose?"
- "Let's think about the math in art! How can we use shapes to describe what you created?"
- "Writing a story helps us understand our art better. What do you want your readers to feel when they see your picture?"
- "Nature is full of surprises! What is something new you learned about the animal or plant you researched?"
- "Art, math, and science can all connect! Can you think of other ways they work together?"
