Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and write numbers 1-10, understand basic addition using objects, and create simple sentences using sight words. The student will also practice counting and develop fine motor skills through fun activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Small objects for counting (like buttons, blocks, or toys)
  • Flashcards with numbers 1-10
  • Flashcards with sight words (like "the," "cat," "is," "on")

Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and review the numbers and sight words with the student. It’s also helpful to have a comfortable workspace ready for the activities.

Activities

  • Counting Treasure Hunt: Hide small objects around the room and have the student find them. As they find each object, they will count them out loud and place them in a pile. This encourages counting practice and movement!

  • Number Art: Using paper and crayons, the student will draw a large number (1-10) and decorate it with drawings that represent that number (e.g., drawing 3 apples for the number 3). This helps with number recognition and creativity.

  • Simple Addition with Objects: Using the small objects, the student will practice simple addition. For example, if they have 3 buttons and you give them 2 more, ask them to count how many they have now. This makes math hands-on and fun!

  • Sentence Building with Sight Words: Using the sight word flashcards, the student can create simple sentences. You can guide them to pick words and arrange them to make sentences like "The cat is on." This helps with reading and writing skills.

Talking Points

  • "Let’s go on a treasure hunt! Can you help me find all the hidden objects and count them as we go?"
  • "Look at this number! Can you tell me what it is? Great job! Now, can you decorate it with some fun drawings?"
  • "If you have 3 buttons and I give you 2 more, how many buttons do you have now? Let’s count them together!"
  • "Let’s make a sentence! Can you pick some words from these cards and tell me what you want to say?"
  • "What do you think this number means? Can you show me with your fingers how many that is?"
  • "How do you feel about counting? Is it fun to find numbers in our activities?"
