Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basics of embroidery, including simple stitches, and create a small embroidered piece of art using basic techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Embroidery hoop (or a simple frame made from cardboard)
  • Fabric (like cotton or felt)
  • Embroidery thread (or any colorful thread)
  • Needle (with a large enough eye for the thread)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil or fabric marker for drawing designs

Before the lesson, make sure to prepare a simple design on the fabric for the student to follow. It could be a smiley face, a flower, or any simple shape they like!

Activities

  • Design Your Art: Have the student draw a simple design on the fabric using a pencil or fabric marker. This will be the guide for their embroidery.
  • Encourage the student to choose their favorite colors and shapes. Remind them that it’s okay to make mistakes because that’s how we learn!

  • Learn Basic Stitches: Teach the student how to make a simple stitch, like the running stitch or the backstitch. Demonstrate it on a separate piece of fabric first.
  • Show them how to pull the thread gently and how to make small, even stitches. Celebrate their first few stitches with lots of praise!

  • Start Embroidering: Let the student start embroidering their design using the stitches they learned. Help them if they get stuck.
  • Encourage them to take their time and enjoy the process. Remind them that it’s about having fun and being creative!

  • Show and Tell: Once they finish their embroidery, have a mini show-and-tell where they can explain what they made and how they did it.
  • This will help build their confidence and communication skills. Applaud their effort and creativity!

Talking Points

  • "Embroidery is like drawing with thread! We get to make pretty pictures on fabric."
  • "Look at how colorful our threads are! What colors do you want to use for your art?"
  • "Each stitch is like a little step. Let’s make our steps nice and even!"
  • "If you make a mistake, that's okay! Mistakes help us learn and make our art unique!"
  • "I can’t wait to see your beautiful creation! You are an artist!"
