  • Pencil
  • Sketchbook or plain paper
  • Eraser
  • Reference object or image

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a quiet and well-lit space to work in.

Activities

  1. Warm-up exercise: Start by practicing different shading techniques. Use your pencil to create a value scale, ranging from light to dark. Experiment with hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending to create different textures and tones.

  2. Choose an object or find an image that you would like to sketch. Focus on an object with interesting shapes and details. Place the object or image in front of you.

  3. Observational sketching: Begin by lightly sketching the basic shapes and proportions of your chosen object. Pay attention to details such as curves, angles, and negative space. Use light lines for this initial sketch.

  4. Refine your sketch: Once you are satisfied with the basic outline, start adding more details and shading to your drawing. Use your shading techniques to create depth and volume in your sketch. Observe the light source and add highlights and shadows accordingly.

  5. Review and reflect: Take a step back and evaluate your sketch. Notice areas that may need improvement or adjustments. Make any necessary changes to enhance the overall quality of your drawing.
