Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different types of animal homes and the food they eat, while also understanding why animals choose specific homes based on their needs.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Access to a comfortable space for discussion and activities
  • Knowledge about common animals and their homes (e.g., birds, rabbits, bears)

Activities

  • Animal Home Drawing:

Have the student draw their favorite animal and its home. Encourage them to think about where the animal lives and what it looks like. Ask them to color it in and make it as detailed as possible!

  • Food Matching Game:

Create a simple matching game where the student matches pictures of animals to their favorite foods. For example, a rabbit with carrots or a bear with honey. This can be done verbally without any cards!

  • Story Time:

Read a short story about an animal and discuss where it lives and what it eats. Ask the student questions about the story to ensure they understand the animal's home and diet.

  • Animal Charades:

Play a game of charades where the student acts out different animals and you guess what they are. After each animal, discuss where they live and what they eat.

Talking Points

  • "What is your favorite animal? Can you tell me where it lives?"
  • "Animals need homes just like we do! What do you think makes a good home for an animal?"
  • "Did you know that some animals eat only plants? What do you think a rabbit likes to eat?"
  • "Some animals, like bears, have to find special food to get ready for winter. What do you think they eat?"
  • "Why do you think birds build their nests high up in trees? What do you think they are trying to protect?"
  • "Every animal has a special home and food that helps them stay safe and healthy. Can you think of an animal and its home?"
