Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own body lotion using simple ingredients. They will learn about the properties of different oils and butters, how to combine them effectively, and the importance of skin hydration.

Materials and Prep

  • Natural oils (e.g., coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil)
  • Shea butter or cocoa butter
  • Essential oils (for fragrance, e.g., lavender, peppermint)
  • Beeswax (optional, for thickness)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or hand mixer
  • Containers for storage (e.g., jars or bottles)
  • Labels for the finished product

Before the lesson, ensure that all materials are gathered and that the workspace is clean and organized. Discuss the importance of hygiene when making body products.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

Start by examining each ingredient. Discuss the benefits of each oil and butter, such as moisturizing properties and skin benefits. This will help the student understand why they are using each component in their lotion.

  • Measuring and Mixing:

Guide the student to measure out the oils and butters. They can experiment with different ratios to see how it affects the texture of the lotion. Mix the ingredients together until fully blended. This hands-on activity will help them develop practical skills.

  • Customizing Scents:

Introduce the student to essential oils. Allow them to choose their favorite scents and add them to the mixture. Discuss the importance of scent in body care products and how certain scents can affect mood.

  • Packaging and Labeling:

Once the lotion is made, have the student pour it into containers. They can create custom labels for their product, which will teach them about marketing and presentation.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a good body lotion? Is it the ingredients, the scent, or the texture?"
  • "Did you know that coconut oil is not only moisturizing but also has antibacterial properties? That's why it's often used in skincare!"
  • "Essential oils can do more than just smell nice; they can also help with relaxation and stress relief. Which scent do you think would be best for calming?"
  • "Why do you think we need to label our products? It helps others know what’s in it and what to expect!"
  • "How do you feel about the lotion you made? What would you change if you made it again?"
