Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own body lotion using simple ingredients. They will learn about the properties of different oils and butters, how to blend them effectively, and the importance of skin hydration.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of carrier oil (such as coconut oil or olive oil)
  • 1/2 cup of shea butter or cocoa butter
  • 1/4 cup of beeswax (optional for thicker lotion)
  • Essential oils for fragrance (optional)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Double boiler or microwave-safe container
  • Whisk or hand mixer
  • Containers for storing the lotion (jars or bottles)

Before starting, it’s important to know the properties of the different oils and butters you will be using, as well as how to handle hot materials safely.

Activities

  • Research and Discuss:

Begin with a short research session on the benefits of different oils and butters used in lotions. Discuss why we use these ingredients and how they affect the skin.

  • Measure and Melt:

Measure out the carrier oil, shea butter, and beeswax. Use a double boiler or microwave to gently melt the ingredients together while stirring. Talk about the importance of temperature control during this process.

  • Mix and Whip:

Once melted, let the mixture cool slightly before adding any essential oils. Whisk or use a hand mixer to blend the ingredients until fluffy. This is a great time to discuss the emulsification process.

  • Containerize:

Transfer the finished lotion into containers. Label them with the ingredients and date made. Discuss the importance of proper storage and shelf life of homemade lotions.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that our skin absorbs a lot of what we put on it? That’s why it’s important to choose natural ingredients for our lotions!"
  • "Carrier oils like coconut oil are great for moisturizing because they are easily absorbed by the skin."
  • "Shea butter is not just a thickener; it also has healing properties and helps to soothe dry skin!"
  • "Essential oils can add not just fragrance but also therapeutic benefits. For example, lavender is known for its calming effects."
  • "Always remember to store your homemade lotion in a cool, dry place to maintain its freshness and effectiveness!"
