Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand simple poems, recognize rhymes, and create their own fun poem using imaginative words and ideas.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • A quiet space for reading and writing

Before the lesson, think about some favorite things to talk about in your poem, like animals, colors, or fun activities. You can also choose a few simple poems to share with the student.

Activities

  • Read Fun Poems:

Start by reading a few fun and simple poems together. Choose poems with lots of rhymes and playful words. Encourage the student to listen for the rhymes and repeat them.

  • Rhyme Hunt:

Go on a rhyme hunt! Ask the student to think of a word, and then find as many words that rhyme with it as possible. For example, if the word is "cat," they might say "hat," "bat," and "mat."

  • Create a Silly Poem:

Now it's time to write a poem! Help the student create a silly poem by picking their favorite things. Encourage them to use their imagination and make it funny! They can draw pictures to go along with their poem.

  • Poem Performance:

Have the student perform their poem for you! They can use funny voices or act out parts of the poem. Celebrate their creativity and have fun together!

Talking Points

  • "What do you think a poem is? A poem is like a song with words that tell us a story or share feelings!"
  • "Can you hear the rhymes in this poem? Rhymes are words that sound the same at the end, like 'dog' and 'frog'!"
  • "What is your favorite animal? Let's use that in our poem! We can make it do silly things!"
  • "When we write our poem, we can choose any words we like! Words can be funny, silly, or even magical!"
  • "How do you feel when you read this poem? Poems can make us feel happy, excited, or even a little silly!"
