Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emily will learn how to make her own soap from scratch, understand the benefits of using soap beyond cleaning, and explore different scent combinations and materials that can enhance her soap-making experience.

Materials and Prep

  • Soap base (glycerin or shea butter)
  • Essential oils (for scent)
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Oatmeal (for exfoliation)
  • Soap molds (silicone molds work best)
  • Microwave-safe bowl or container
  • Stirring stick (like a popsicle stick)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Optional: colorants (like soap dye)

Before the lesson, ensure you have a clean workspace and all materials ready. Make sure to read the instructions on the soap base packaging for safety and usage guidelines.

Activities

  • Introduction to Soap Making:

Start with a brief discussion about what soap is and how it works. Explain the science behind soap, including how it helps to remove dirt and bacteria.

  • Choosing Ingredients:

Let Emily explore different scent combinations using essential oils. Discuss the benefits of each ingredient, such as aloe for skin hydration and oatmeal for exfoliation.

  • Soap Making Process:

Guide Emily through the step-by-step process of melting the soap base, adding scents and other ingredients, and pouring the mixture into molds.

  • Creative Labeling:

Once the soap is set, have Emily create fun labels for her soap bars, including the name, ingredients, and any special benefits.
