Objective
By the end of this lesson, Dayton will explore various career options, understand the skills and education required for each, and reflect on his own interests and strengths to help guide his future career choices.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pen for taking notes
- Access to a computer or smartphone for research (if available)
- Printed list of various careers (can be created beforehand)
- Timer or stopwatch for activity time management
Before the lesson, prepare a diverse list of careers across different fields such as technology, healthcare, arts, trades, and business. Familiarize yourself with basic information about each career to guide discussions.
Activities
-
Career Brainstorming Session:
Start with a brainstorming session where Dayton can write down all the careers he knows or is interested in. Encourage him to think outside the box and include any unconventional careers he may have heard about.
-
Research & Present:
Choose three careers from the brainstorming session. Spend time researching each one, focusing on responsibilities, required education, and potential salary. Dayton can then present his findings in a mini-presentation format.
-
Job Shadowing Simulation:
Create a role-playing activity where Dayton can simulate a day in the life of a chosen career. He can act out tasks or responsibilities associated with that job, giving him a taste of what it might be like.
-
Self-Reflection:
Conclude the lesson with a self-reflection exercise where Dayton writes down his thoughts about what careers interest him most and why. Encourage him to think about his skills and passions in relation to the careers discussed.
