Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to collect and analyze data related to dirt bikes using basic statistics.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Coloring materials
- Access to a dirt bike or pictures of dirt bikes
Activities
-
Activity 1: Dirt Bike Survey
Go outside and observe different dirt bikes in your neighborhood or search for pictures online. Create a survey with questions like "What color is the dirt bike?", "How many wheels does it have?", "How many people can ride on it?", etc. Ask your family members or friends to answer the survey questions. Record their responses on paper.
-
Activity 2: Data Representation
Based on the responses from your survey, create a bar graph or pictograph to represent the data. Use different colors to represent different categories, such as colors of dirt bikes or the number of wheels. Make sure to label the axes and give your graph a title.
-
Activity 3: Data Analysis
Examine your graph and answer questions about the data. For example, you can ask yourself, "Which color of dirt bike is the most popular?", "How many dirt bikes have three wheels?", "Which category has the fewest dirt bikes?" Discuss your findings with a family member or friend.
Second Grade Talking Points

- "A bar graph uses bars to show the amount or frequency of something."
- "A pictograph uses pictures or symbols to represent data."
- "We can analyze data by looking at the graph and answering questions about it."
