Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a unique Lego structure using their imagination, understand basic building techniques, and explain their design choices.
Materials and Prep
- Assorted Lego bricks in various shapes and sizes
- A flat surface to build on
- Optional: A timer for timed challenges
Before starting the lesson, ensure that the student has a clean and organized space to build. Encourage them to think about what they want to create before they start building.
Activities
-
Free Build Challenge:
Set a timer for 15 minutes and challenge the student to build anything they can imagine. After the time is up, they will present their creation and explain what it is and how they built it.
-
Structure of the Day:
Choose a theme, like “a house” or “a spaceship,” and have the student build a model based on that theme. Discuss the different parts of the structure and how they fit together.
-
Building Techniques:
Introduce the student to different building techniques such as stacking, interlocking, and creating bases. Have them practice these techniques by building a small tower or bridge.
-
Story Time with Legos:
After building, the student can create a short story about their Lego creation. They can use their imagination to come up with characters and a plot that involves their structure.
Talking Points
- "What do you think makes a strong building? Is it the base, the walls, or something else?"
- "Can you tell me what inspired your design? Where did you get your ideas?"
- "How do you decide which pieces to use first? Do you have a plan or just go with the flow?"
- "What is your favorite part of your Lego creation? Why do you like it?"
- "If you could add one more thing to your structure, what would it be? How would it change your creation?"
- "Do you think your structure could stand up to a big wind? How can we make it stronger?"
- "What story can you tell about your Lego creation? Who lives there or what adventures happen?"
