Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of protecting landscapes and landforms on various scales, including global, national, and local levels. The student will explore various initiatives, such as UNESCO World Heritage listings and community actions, and will be able to articulate the role of individuals and organizations in preserving these vital resources.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for notes and reflections
  • Pencil or pen for writing
  • Access to the internet for research (if desired)
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for creative projects
  • Outdoor space for physical activities and observations

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with some UNESCO World Heritage sites and local landscapes that are significant in your area. This will help in making the lesson more relatable and engaging.

Activities

  • Research Project: The student will choose a UNESCO World Heritage site to research. They will create a presentation or a poster that includes key facts, the importance of the site, and any threats it faces. This can be shared with family or friends.
  • Art Creation: Using art supplies, the student will create a landscape painting or drawing that represents a local landform or landscape they wish to protect. They can also write a short poem or story about the landscape.
  • Community Action Plan: The student will brainstorm and write down three actions they can take in their community to promote landscape protection. This can include organizing a clean-up day, starting a petition, or raising awareness through social media.
  • Physical Exploration: If possible, take a field trip to a local park or natural area. The student will observe the landscape, take notes, and discuss what makes it unique and worth protecting.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think landscapes and landforms are important to our planet?"
  • "Can you name some UNESCO World Heritage sites and explain why they were chosen?"
  • "What role do you think NGOs play in protecting landscapes?"
  • "How can local communities make a difference in preserving their natural environments?"
  • "What actions can you personally take to help protect landscapes and landforms?"
