Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to describe how diverse cultures contribute to Australian society through various aspects such as food, language, workforce, community work, science, technology, arts, religion, and sport. The student will gain an understanding of the importance of multiculturalism in shaping Australia’s identity.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pencil for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper)
  • Printed images of diverse cultural foods, languages, and art from Australian communities
  • Access to videos or documentaries on Australian multiculturalism (optional)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the basic definitions of culture and multiculturalism. Prepare a list of diverse cultures present in Australia, such as Indigenous Australians, British, Italian, Greek, Chinese, and Indian communities.

Activities

  • Culture Map:

    Create a culture map of Australia. Use a large piece of paper to draw a map of Australia and label different regions with the cultures that are prevalent there. Include symbols or images that represent each culture.

  • Cooking Session:

    Choose a recipe from one of the diverse cultures in Australia and prepare it together. Discuss the significance of the dish and its cultural background while cooking.

  • Language Exploration:

    Research and learn a few words or phrases from different languages spoken in Australia. Create a mini-dictionary to showcase these words and their meanings.

  • Art and Expression:

    Create a piece of artwork that represents the cultural diversity in Australia. This could be a collage, painting, or drawing that incorporates symbols from various cultures.

  • Sports Day:

    Research a sport that is popular among a specific cultural group in Australia. Organize a mini sports day to play that sport and discuss its cultural significance.
