Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the significance of King Hezekiah's life, particularly his faith, leadership, and the miracles attributed to him, such as the healing of his illness and the sign of the shadow moving backwards. The student will also engage in a hands-on experiment to visualize the concept of faith and divine intervention in Hezekiah's story.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking and drawing
  • A clear space for conducting the experiment
  • Access to a clock or timer
  • Optional: A Bible or online resource for reference to the story of King Hezekiah

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with the key events in King Hezekiah's life, especially the accounts found in 2 Kings 18-20. Understanding these events will help guide the discussion and activities.

Activities

  • Story Time:

Read the story of King Hezekiah from the Bible or a children's Bible. Discuss his character traits, his faith in God, and the challenges he faced. This will provide a foundation for the experiment.

  • Shadow Experiment:

Using a clock or timer, conduct a simple experiment to demonstrate the concept of time and how it can be perceived differently. The student can mark the position of the shadow at different intervals and discuss how Hezekiah received a sign from God through the shadow moving backward.

  • Creative Drawing:

After the experiment, have the student draw a scene from King Hezekiah's life, such as his prayer for healing or the miracle of the shadow. This activity allows for creative expression and reinforces what they have learned.

  • Discussion and Reflection:

Engage the student in a discussion about what they learned from the story and the experiment. Ask them to reflect on the importance of faith and how it relates to their own life.

Talking Points

  • "King Hezekiah was known for his strong faith in God. He faced many challenges, but he always turned to God for help."
  • "One of the most remarkable events in his life was when he was sick and prayed for healing. God answered his prayer and gave him a sign."
  • "The sign involved the shadow moving backward, which was a miraculous event. Can you imagine how amazing that must have been for Hezekiah?"
  • "This experiment with shadows helps us understand how time can be a part of God's miracles. It shows us that faith can lead to extraordinary things."
  • "What do you think we can learn from Hezekiah's story about faith and trust in difficult times?"
