Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the Cornell note-taking method and be able to effectively use it for English language grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking. The student will also learn how to highlight and annotate texts to enhance comprehension and retention.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or notebook for taking notes
  • Pencil or pen for writing
  • Highlighter for highlighting important information
  • Access to a reading passage or audio for listening practice

Before the lesson, ensure that the student is familiar with basic grammar concepts and has a quiet space for reading and writing activities.

Activities

  • Introduction to Cornell Notes:

Begin by explaining the structure of Cornell notes, which includes three sections: cues, notes, and summary. Show the student how to set up their page for effective note-taking.

  • Reading and Highlighting:

Provide the student with a reading passage. Ask them to read through it and highlight key points, vocabulary, and important ideas. Discuss why they chose to highlight certain parts.

  • Listening Activity:

Play an audio clip related to grammar or writing. Have the student take notes using the Cornell method, focusing on main ideas and supporting details. After listening, have them summarize what they heard.

  • Writing Practice:

Have the student write a short paragraph using the grammar concepts they learned. Encourage them to use their Cornell notes as a reference. After writing, they can highlight their main ideas.

  • Peer Review:

If possible, arrange for the student to share their writing with a family member or friend. They can provide feedback and help the student annotate their work for further improvement.
