Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will gain a deeper understanding of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar," particularly focusing on the themes of politics, oratory, and subterfuge. They will also explore Marlon Brando's portrayal of Mark Antony through the lens of method acting and learn how to express these concepts through watercolor portrait techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Watercolor paints
  • Watercolor paper
  • Brushes
  • Palette for mixing colors
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Printed excerpts from "Julius Caesar" (especially Antony's speeches)
  • Access to a video clip of Marlon Brando as Mark Antony (if available)

Before starting the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with the basic plot of "Julius Caesar" and has an understanding of the historical context of the play. It would be helpful to have a brief discussion about the significance of oratory in politics.

Activities

  • Reading and Analysis:

Start by reading key excerpts from Antony's speeches in "Julius Caesar." Discuss the rhetorical techniques he uses, such as ethos, pathos, and logos. Analyze how these techniques influence the audience's perception of Caesar and Brutus.

  • Character Study:

Watch a short clip of Marlon Brando's performance as Mark Antony. Discuss his use of gesture and emotion in delivering the speech. How does his portrayal enhance the themes of the play?

  • Watercolor Portrait:

Using the insights gained from the reading and video, create a watercolor portrait of Mark Antony. Encourage the student to think about how color and brush technique can convey emotion and character traits, reflecting Antony's complex personality.

  • Rhetorical Speech Practice:

Have the student write a short speech as if they were Antony, addressing the crowd after Caesar's assassination. They should incorporate elements of oratory learned from the play. Practice delivering the speech with emphasis on gesture and emotion, similar to Brando's performance.

  • "In 'Julius Caesar,' Antony's speeches are powerful examples of rhetoric. What techniques does he use to sway the public?"
  • "Marlon Brando's portrayal of Antony is iconic. How does his method acting style contribute to the emotional impact of the character?"
  • "Consider the role of subterfuge in the play. How do characters manipulate truth and perception to achieve their goals?"
  • "What does the use of gesture and body language tell us about Antony's character and his intentions?"
  • "How can we express complex emotions through visual art, like watercolor, just as Antony expresses complex ideas through speech?"
