Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of Rococo art, specifically focusing on Aeneas, Poussin, Cupid, and cherubs. They will explore the use of cool and warm palettes, light and shadow, and contouring in watercolor painting. Additionally, the lesson will connect these artistic concepts to themes of ambition, destiny, fate, and passion found in Vergil's works.

Materials and Prep

  • Watercolor paints (cool and warm colors)
  • Watercolor paper
  • Paintbrushes (various sizes)
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Reference images of Rococo art, specifically Aeneas, Poussin, and cherubs
  • Access to Vergil's texts (selections focusing on themes of ambition and destiny)

Before the lesson, gather reference images and select passages from Vergil that highlight ambition, destiny, and passion. Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of Rococo art.

Activities

  • Exploring Rococo Art

Begin by examining various Rococo artworks. Discuss the characteristics of the style, focusing on the themes of love, nature, and playfulness. Ask the student to identify elements they find appealing and how these elements relate to the themes of ambition and destiny in Vergil's writings.

  • Watercolor Palette Exploration

Have the student create a color wheel using both cool and warm colors. Discuss how these colors can evoke different emotions and how they can be used to represent the themes of passion and fate in their artwork.

  • Creating a Watercolor Scene

Using the reference images, the student will create their own watercolor scene featuring Aeneas, Cupid, or cherubs. Encourage them to use light and shadow techniques to enhance the depth and emotion of their painting, emphasizing contour and glow.

  • Ekphrasis Writing

After completing the painting, the student will write an ekphrastic poem or short prose piece inspired by their artwork. This should reflect their understanding of the themes of ambition, destiny, and passion as depicted in both their painting and Vergil's text.
