Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe various jobs and professions in English, understand common vocabulary related to the workplace, and express personal interests and goals regarding future careers.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pen/pencil for note-taking
  • Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming activity
  • Access to a dictionary or thesaurus (optional for vocabulary building)
  • Prior knowledge of basic job vocabulary (e.g., teacher, doctor, engineer)

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session:

    The student will brainstorm a list of different jobs and professions they know. This can be done on a whiteboard or large paper. Encourage them to think of jobs they are interested in or have seen in their community.

  • Job Descriptions:

    The student will choose three jobs from their list and write a short description of each. They should include what the job entails, required skills, and why they find it interesting. This will help them practice writing in English.

  • Role-Playing Interviews:

    The student will pair up with the teacher (or act as both roles) to conduct a mock job interview. The student will take turns being the interviewer and the interviewee, using the job descriptions they created. This will help build speaking and listening skills.

  • Vocabulary Match-Up:

    Create a list of job-related vocabulary words and their definitions. The student will match the words to their definitions, reinforcing their understanding of the terminology associated with different professions.
