Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a foundational understanding of Joseph Pilates' principles, the use of the Pilates reformer machine, and the key concepts of Iyengar Yoga. The student will also learn how to incorporate ergonomic design and pranayama techniques into their practice, enhancing their overall well-being and body awareness.

Materials and Prep

  • Pilates reformer machine
  • Yoga mat
  • Yoga props (blocks, straps, blankets)
  • Notebook and pen for notes
  • Comfortable clothing for movement

Before the lesson, ensure that the Pilates reformer is set up correctly and that the space is clear for practicing yoga. Familiarize yourself with basic Pilates and Iyengar Yoga terminology to aid in understanding during the activities.

Activities

  • Introduction to Pilates Principles

Begin with a discussion about the key principles of Pilates, such as concentration, control, center, flow, precision, and breathing. Engage the student by asking them to share what they know about these principles and how they relate to movement.

  • Pilates Reformer Basics

Guide the student through basic exercises on the Pilates reformer, focusing on form and alignment. Start with simple movements like footwork and arm pulls, emphasizing the importance of control and precision in each exercise.

  • Exploring Iyengar Yoga

Introduce basic Iyengar Yoga poses, using props to assist in achieving proper alignment. Encourage the student to experience how props can enhance their practice and make challenging poses more accessible.

  • Pranayama Practice

Conclude the lesson with a guided pranayama session, teaching the student various breathing techniques. Discuss the significance of breath in both Pilates and yoga, highlighting how it can enhance focus and relaxation.
