Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use arithmetic skills to calculate the number of Lego bricks needed to build a T-Rex.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Pen and paper
- Ruler
Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is required.
Activities
- Start by discussing the dimensions of the T-Rex you want to build. Measure the length, width, and height of the T-Rex using a ruler.
- Using the measurements, calculate the volume of the T-Rex by multiplying the length, width, and height.
- Research the average volume of a standard Lego brick and determine how many bricks are needed to fill one cubic unit of space.
- Divide the volume of the T-Rex by the volume of a Lego brick to find the total number of bricks needed.
- Round up the result to the nearest whole number since you can't have a fraction of a Lego brick.
- Finally, count the number of Lego bricks you have available and compare it with the calculated number to see if you have enough or need to acquire more.
Seventh Grade Talking Points
- "In this lesson, we will be using our math skills to calculate the number of Lego bricks needed to build a T-Rex."
- "We will start by measuring the dimensions of the T-Rex to determine its volume."
- "Next, we will find out how many Lego bricks are needed to fill one cubic unit of space."
- "Using this information, we will divide the volume of the T-Rex by the volume of a Lego brick to find the total number of bricks needed."
- "Remember to round up the result to the nearest whole number, as we can't have fractions of Lego bricks."
- "Finally, we will compare the calculated number with the number of Lego bricks we have available to see if we have enough or need to acquire more."
