Objective
By the end of this lesson, Halen will understand the basic concept of magnets, including what they are, how they work, and some fun things they can do.
Materials and Prep
- A refrigerator magnet (or any small magnet)
- Various small metal objects (like paper clips, coins, etc.)
- Some non-metal objects (like a plastic toy, a piece of paper, etc.)
- Space to explore and play safely
Before the lesson, ensure that all objects are safe for Halen to handle. Familiarize yourself with how magnets work to answer any questions he might have.
Activities
- Magnet Discovery:
Show Halen the magnet and let him explore it. Ask him to try to pick up different objects with the magnet. Discuss which objects stick and which do not.
- Magnet Fishing:
Place the metal objects on the ground and let Halen use the magnet to "fish" them up. Make it a game by timing how many he can pick up in a minute!
- Magnet Art:
Using the refrigerator magnet, let Halen stick it to the fridge and then try to stick some of the metal objects on it. He can create fun shapes or patterns!
Talking Points
- "Look at this magnet! It can stick to some things but not others. Can you guess why?"
- "Let's see what happens when we bring the magnet close to these metal objects. What do you think will happen?"
- "Magnets are like magic! They can pull things without even touching them. Isn’t that cool?"
- "What happens when we try the magnet on this toy? Does it stick or not? Why do you think that is?"
