Objective

By the end of this lesson, Vinee will learn how to prepare a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, including planning the meal and understanding the cooking process. Vinee will also develop skills in meal planning and kitchen safety.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 whole turkey (size depending on the number of guests)
  • Cooking tools (roasting pan, thermometer, basting brush)
  • Ingredients (butter, herbs, spices, garlic, onion, etc.)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Kitchen towels
  • Pencil and paper for meal planning

Before starting, make sure to wash your hands and clean the kitchen surfaces. Discuss any allergies or dietary restrictions with family members.

Activities

  • Meal Planning:

    Vinee will create a menu for Thanksgiving dinner. This includes deciding on side dishes, desserts, and drinks. Encourage Vinee to think about what family members enjoy eating.

  • Turkey Preparation:

    Vinee will learn how to properly thaw, clean, and season the turkey. This includes discussing the importance of washing hands and kitchen tools after handling raw meat.

  • Cooking Time:

    Vinee will understand how to calculate cooking time based on the weight of the turkey. Use a simple formula to help Vinee figure out when to start cooking the turkey to have it ready for dinner.

  • Setting the Table:

    Vinee will practice setting a festive Thanksgiving table. Discuss the importance of presentation and how it can make a meal feel special.
