Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify, blend, segment, and manipulate phonological units in spoken words. This will help them develop essential reading skills and the ability to create their own texts.

Materials and Prep

  • No additional materials are needed; just your voice and imagination!
  • Be prepared to use fun sounds and silly words to keep the student engaged.
  • Know some simple words that can be easily broken down into sounds (e.g., cat, dog, sun).

Activities

  • Sound Safari: Go on a "sound safari" around the house or yard. Choose an object and say its name slowly, emphasizing each sound. For example, for "cat," say "c-a-t." Ask the student to repeat it and then blend the sounds back together.

  • Phoneme Hopscotch: Create an imaginary hopscotch grid on the floor. Call out a word and ask the student to hop on each sound as they say it. For example, for "dog," they would hop and say "d-o-g." This helps with segmentation and blending.

  • Word Wizard: Pretend to be wizards who can change words by adding or removing sounds. For example, if you say "bat," ask the student what happens if you take away the "b." They should say "at." This encourages manipulation of phonological units.

  • Rhyming Games: Take turns saying a word and finding a word that rhymes with it. For example, if you say "cat," the student can say "hat." This activity helps with phonological awareness and sound recognition.

Talking Points

  • "Can you hear the sounds in the word 'cat'? Let's say it together: c-a-t!"
  • "When we hop on each sound, we are like sound superheroes! Can you hop and say 'dog' with me? d-o-g!"
  • "If we are word wizards, we can change 'bat' to 'at' by taking away the 'b.' Can you do that too?"
  • "Rhymes are like friends! Can you think of a word that rhymes with 'sun'? What about 'fun'?"
  • "Every time we play with sounds, we are getting better at reading and making our own stories. Isn't that fun?"
