Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to read simple decodable texts aloud with confidence and automaticity, demonstrating an understanding of the sounds and words they are reading.

Materials and Prep

  • Decodable text (simple sentences or short stories)
  • Quiet reading space
  • Timer (optional for fun reading challenges)
  • Comfortable seating for the student
  • Encouraging stickers or rewards for motivation

Before the lesson, ensure the reading space is cozy and free of distractions. Choose a decodable text that is suitable for the student's reading level, focusing on words they have already learned.

Activities

  • Read Aloud Together

Start by reading the decodable text aloud together. Point to each word as you read to help the student connect sounds with letters. Make it interactive by using funny voices for different characters!

  • Choral Reading

After reading together, try choral reading where both of you read the text at the same time. This will help the student gain confidence and rhythm in their reading.

  • Word Hunt

Go on a word hunt! Choose a few words from the text and have the student find them on the page. Celebrate each time they find a word, reinforcing their recognition skills.

  • Reading Challenge

Set a fun reading challenge! Use a timer and see how many sentences the student can read in one minute. Encourage them to beat their own record each time!

  • Creative Storytelling

After reading, ask the student to tell their own story using some of the words they learned. This will help them use their imagination while reinforcing their reading skills.

Talking Points

  • "Look at this word! Can you sound it out with me?"
  • "Great job! Now let's read it together. Ready? Go!"
  • "You found the word! You're a super word detective!"
  • "Wow, you read so many sentences! Let's see if you can read even more next time!"
  • "Now, let's make up a story together! What happens next?"
