Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply phonological, orthographic, and morphological strategies to spell familiar and high-frequency words while creating simple texts. The student will also gain confidence in their spelling abilities through engaging activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or crayon
  • Whiteboard (if available) or a flat surface to write on
  • List of familiar and high-frequency words (like "cat," "dog," "the," "and")
  • A fun storybook to read together

Before the lesson, prepare a list of high-frequency words that the student is already familiar with. Choose a fun storybook that includes some of these words for reading time.

Activities

  • Word Hunt:

Go on a word hunt around the house! Look for objects and find the words that describe them. For example, find a "cat" and write it down. This helps connect words to real-life objects.

  • Sound It Out:

Choose a familiar word and break it down into sounds. For example, for "dog," say "d-o-g." Then, try to write it down together. This activity will reinforce phonological skills.

  • Story Time:

Read a fun story together. Stop at certain high-frequency words and ask the student to spell them out loud. This practice will help them recognize and remember the words.

  • Word Creation:

Ask the student to create a simple sentence using at least two high-frequency words. Help them sound out and spell the words as they write their sentence on paper.

Talking Points

  • "Can you hear the sounds in the word 'cat'? What do you think they are?"
  • "Let's look around! What things can we find that match our words?"
  • "When we read, we can find words we know! Can you spot any words you recognize?"
  • "How many sounds can you hear in the word 'dog'? Let's say them together!"
  • "What fun sentence can we make with our words? Let's write it down!"
