Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to describe the position of objects using simple terms such as "in front of," "behind," "next to," and "on top of." The student will also practice giving and following simple directions to move objects or themselves around the space.

Materials and Prep

  • Space to move around (a room or outdoor area)
  • Everyday objects (toys, books, or household items)
  • Clear area free of obstacles for safety

Activities

  • Object Position Game: Place a few objects around the room. Ask the student to describe where each object is using position words. For example, "Where is the teddy bear?" and guide them to say, "The teddy bear is on the table."

  • Follow the Directions: Create simple directions for the student to follow. For example, "Take three steps forward and then turn to your left." This helps them practice following directions while moving around.

  • Obstacle Course: Set up a mini obstacle course using the objects. Give directions like, "Go around the chair, then jump over the pillow!" This makes learning positions fun and active.

Talking Points

  • "Can you tell me where the ball is? Is it in front of or behind the box?"
  • "When I say 'next to,' I mean right beside something. Can you find something next to the chair?"
  • "Let's practice! Can you follow my directions? Walk to the door and then turn around!"
  • "If I say 'on top of,' what do you think that means? Can you put your toy on top of the table?"
  • "Great job! Now let's make an obstacle course. Can you show me how to go around the table?"
