Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to collect data using objects, create simple data displays, and interpret the information presented in those displays.

Materials and Prep

  • Various small objects (e.g., buttons, blocks, or crayons)
  • Paper for drawing or writing
  • Markers or crayons for coloring
  • Space to spread out and play

Before the lesson, gather a variety of small objects that can be easily counted and sorted. Make sure the student understands what data means in simple terms, like "information we can count and see."

Activities

  • Object Hunt: Go on a treasure hunt around the house or yard to find different small objects. Once collected, help the student count how many of each they found.

  • Sorting Fun: Have the student sort the collected objects into groups based on color, size, or shape. Discuss how many are in each group.

  • Data Display Creation: Using the sorted objects, encourage the student to create a simple graph on paper by drawing pictures or using the objects to show how many are in each group.

  • Story Time: Ask the student to tell a story about their objects. For example, "I have 3 red buttons and 2 blue buttons. What can we say about them?"

Talking Points

  • "What do you think data means? It's like counting how many of something we have!"
  • "Let's count how many of each object we found. Can you help me with that?"
  • "How can we sort these objects? Can you put all the red ones together?"
  • "Look at our graph! What does it tell us about our objects? Which group has the most?"
  • "Can you tell me a story about your favorite group of objects? What makes them special?"
