Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize, describe, and continue simple repeating patterns using everyday objects or actions. They will understand the concept of patterns and be able to create their own!
Materials and Prep
- Everyday objects (e.g., toys, blocks, crayons, or fruits)
- Space to arrange objects for pattern creation
- A comfortable area for discussion and activities
- Knowledge of basic patterns (e.g., color, shape, size)
Activities
-
Object Pattern Creation:
The student will gather a selection of everyday objects and arrange them in a pattern (e.g., red block, blue block, red block). The student will then describe the pattern and continue it.
-
Movement Patterns:
Using simple actions (like clap, stomp, clap), the student will create a movement pattern. After demonstrating the pattern, the student will invite you to join in and continue it together.
-
Color Patterns with Art:
Using crayons or markers, the student will draw a series of shapes in a color pattern (e.g., red circle, blue square, red circle). They will explain their pattern and then create a new one.
-
Pattern Hunt:
Go on a mini treasure hunt around the house or yard to find patterns in nature or objects (like stripes on a shirt or spots on a ball). The student will point them out and describe them.
Talking Points
- "What do you think a pattern is? Can you find one around us?"
- "Look at this pattern! Can you tell me what comes next?"
- "How did you make your pattern? Can you explain it to me?"
- "Patterns can be made with colors, shapes, and even sounds! Let's make some together!"
- "Great job! Patterns are everywhere! Can you find any more patterns after our lesson?"
