Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify half the length of various objects and find the halfway point between two points. This will help them understand the concept of division and symmetry in a fun and engaging way!
Materials and Prep
- Two equal-length strings or pieces of yarn (any length will do)
- Two small toys or objects of equal size (like blocks or stuffed animals)
- A safe space to work where the student can stretch out the strings and play with the toys
Activities
-
String Stretching: Have the student hold one end of a string while you hold the other. Together, stretch the string out and ask the student to find the halfway point by folding the string in half. This will help them see what half looks like!
-
Toy Team: Place the two small toys or objects a distance apart. Ask the student to find the halfway point between the toys by moving them closer together. This activity encourages them to think about space and distance.
-
Draw and Cut: Have the student draw a long line on a piece of paper. Then, ask them to find the halfway point by folding the paper in half. After that, they can cut along the fold to see two equal parts!
Talking Points
- "Can you show me what half of this string looks like?"
- "When we put these toys closer together, where do you think the halfway point is?"
- "Look at this line! If we fold it, we can find the middle. Let’s see what happens!"
- "Half means two equal parts. Can you find two pieces that are the same size?"
- "Great job! Finding half is like sharing something equally. Can you think of something else we can share?"
