Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to manipulate, describe, and sort three-dimensional objects using their hands and words, enhancing their understanding of shapes and spatial relationships.

Materials and Prep

  • Various three-dimensional objects (like balls, boxes, and cups) found around the house.
  • Clear space for sorting and playing with the objects.
  • Optional: A camera or smartphone to take pictures of the objects for later discussion.

Before the lesson, gather a variety of three-dimensional objects. Make sure the space is safe for the student to explore and play with these objects.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Go on a shape hunt around the house. Ask the student to find and collect different three-dimensional objects. Discuss their shapes and sizes as they find them.

  • Sorting Game:

Once the objects are collected, help the student sort them into groups based on their shapes (e.g., all the balls together, all the boxes together). Talk about why they sorted them that way.

  • Shape Descriptions:

Pick one object at a time and describe it together. Ask questions like, "What color is it?" "How many sides does it have?" and "Can you roll it or stack it?"

  • Creative Building:

Use the three-dimensional objects to build something together. It could be a tower, a house, or anything the student imagines. Discuss the shapes they are using while building.

Talking Points

  • "Look at this shape! What do you think it is? Can you tell me about it?"
  • "Let’s sort these objects! Can you find all the round ones? What do we call them?"
  • "How many sides does this box have? Can you count them with me?"
  • "What happens when we stack these shapes? Can they fall over?"
  • "Let’s build something together! What shapes do you want to use? How tall can we make it?"
