Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and describe some qualities of different artworks, such as colors, shapes, and feelings they express.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Examples of different artworks (can be printed images or shown on a screen)
- Space to create art
Before the lesson, gather various pieces of artwork that show different styles, colors, and emotions. Make sure the student has a comfortable space to work on their art.
Activities
-
Art Exploration:
Show the student different artworks and ask them to describe what they see. Encourage them to talk about colors, shapes, and what feelings the artwork gives them.
-
Color Hunt:
Have the student choose their favorite color from the artworks shown. Then, they can create their own drawing using that color and other colors they like!
-
Feelings in Art:
Ask the student to pick an artwork that makes them feel happy or sad. Then, they can draw their own picture that shows a feeling, using colors and shapes that match that feeling.
-
Art Show:
At the end of the lesson, have a mini art show! Let the student display their artwork and share what they created and why they chose to make it that way.
Talking Points
- "Look at all these colors! What colors do you see in this artwork?"
- "How does this picture make you feel? Happy, sad, or maybe something else?"
- "Can you find any shapes in this artwork? What shapes do you see?"
- "What do you think the artist wanted us to feel when they made this?"
- "Now it's your turn! What will you create to show your feelings?"
