Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of quiet time and will have engaged in various calming activities that promote relaxation and mindfulness.

Materials and Prep

  • A comfortable space for quiet time (a cozy corner or a quiet room)
  • Pillows or cushions for comfort
  • A timer (optional, to keep track of quiet time)

Before starting the lesson, ensure the space is free from distractions like loud noises or bright lights. Explain to the student that quiet time is a special time to relax and recharge.

Activities

  • Mindful Breathing: The student can sit or lie down comfortably and practice breathing in deeply through the nose and out through the mouth. Count to four while inhaling and exhaling.
  • This activity helps calm the mind and body. Encourage the student to focus on how their breath feels as they breathe in and out.

  • Nature Visualization: Have the student close their eyes and imagine a peaceful place in nature, like a quiet forest or a calm beach. Ask them to describe what they see, hear, and feel.
  • This activity encourages creativity and helps the student to visualize a calming environment, promoting relaxation.

  • Gentle Stretching: Teach the student a few gentle stretches they can do while sitting or standing. Focus on stretching the arms, neck, and back.
  • Stretching helps release tension in the body and can be very soothing. Remind the student to take deep breaths while stretching.

  • Quiet Reading or Reflection: Allow the student to spend some time reading a favorite book or simply reflecting on their day in silence.
  • This activity encourages independent thinking and can be a great way to unwind. If they prefer, they can also draw or write in a journal about their thoughts.
