Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of quiet time for relaxation and creativity. They will engage in various calming activities that promote mindfulness and self-reflection.

Materials and Prep

  • Comfortable seating area (like a cushion or chair)
  • Quiet space free from distractions
  • Timer (optional, for setting quiet time intervals)
  • Notebook or journal (optional, for writing or drawing)

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the environment is quiet and comfortable. Explain to the student that this time is for relaxation and creativity, and they can express themselves in any way they like.

Activities

  • Mindful Breathing

Start with a few minutes of mindful breathing. Have the student sit comfortably, close their eyes, and take deep breaths. Inhale through the nose for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale through the mouth for a count of four. Repeat this a few times to help them relax.

  • Nature Observation

Take a moment to observe nature if possible. Sit by a window or go outside and encourage the student to listen to the sounds around them, like birds chirping or leaves rustling. Ask them to describe what they see and hear.

  • Creative Drawing or Writing

Provide the student with a notebook or some paper to draw or write. Encourage them to express their feelings or thoughts about their quiet time experience. They can draw a scene from nature or write a short poem.

  • Story Time

Read a short story or a calming poem together. After reading, discuss the themes and characters, allowing the student to share their thoughts and feelings about the story.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think quiet time is important?"
  • "Can you feel your body relaxing when you breathe deeply?"
  • "What sounds do you hear right now? How do they make you feel?"
  • "What did you like drawing or writing about? Why did you choose that?"
  • "How does the story we read make you feel? Can you relate to any part of it?"
  • "What is your favorite thing about having quiet time?"
  • "How can you use quiet time in your day-to-day life?"
  • "What new things did you discover about yourself during quiet time?"
