Objective
By the end of this lesson, Kaluna will understand basic principles of physics through hands-on activities using dominoes. She will learn about motion, force, and energy while having fun creating domino patterns and observing how they interact.
Materials and Prep
- Dominoes (any number available)
Before the lesson, ensure that the dominoes are clean and in good condition. Familiarize yourself with basic physics terms like force, motion, and energy to explain them in simple terms.
Activities
-
Domino Rally:
Kaluna will create a domino rally by setting up dominoes in a line or in creative patterns. Once she finishes, she can knock over the first domino and watch how the rest follow. This will demonstrate the concept of motion and energy transfer.
-
Experiment with Angles:
Kaluna can try setting up dominoes at different angles and observe how the angle affects the speed and movement of the falling dominoes. This will help her understand how force and gravity work together.
-
Domino Art:
Using the dominoes, Kaluna can create colorful patterns or shapes. After creating her art, she can knock them over to see how the design changes when they fall. This will combine her interest in art with physics!
Talking Points
- "When we knock over the first domino, what happens next? That's called motion!"
- "Do you see how the dominoes fall one after the other? That's energy being transferred!"
- "What do you think will happen if we change the angle of the dominoes? Let's find out!"
- "Can you create a design with the dominoes? How does it feel to see your art come to life?"
- "Why do you think the dominoes fall down instead of up? That's because of gravity!"
- "What if we make a really big domino rally? How many dominoes do you think we can use?"
- "Can you explain to me what you learned today about how things move? I want to hear your thoughts!"
