Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the transition from the Classical World to the Medieval period, including key events, cultural shifts, and the influence of Christianity on society during this time. They will engage with primary sources and develop skills in close reading and critical analysis.

Materials and Prep

  • Selected primary source documents from the Medieval period (e.g., excerpts from Augustine, Gregory of Tours, or the Rule of St. Benedict).
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research.
  • Notebook and writing materials for note-taking and reflections.
  • Printouts of a timeline of the end of the Roman Empire and the rise of Medieval Europe.
  • Preparation to discuss how Christianity influenced culture and governance during the transition from Antiquity to the Medieval period.

Activities

  • Primary Source Analysis: The student will read selected excerpts from primary sources related to the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity. They will identify key themes, such as the role of the Church in society and the transition of power. After reading, they will summarize their findings and discuss how these sources reflect the cultural shifts of the time.

  • Create a Timeline: Using the timeline printouts provided, the student will create a visual timeline that highlights significant events from the end of the Roman Empire to the establishment of the early Medieval period. They will include key figures, events, and cultural developments, and present their timeline to an audience (such as family members) to reinforce their learning.

  • Role-Playing Debate: The student will participate in a role-playing debate where they will assume the roles of various historical figures from the Medieval period (e.g., a Christian bishop, a pagan leader, or a Roman senator). They will debate the influence of Christianity on society, using arguments based on historical context and primary sources. This activity will help them understand different perspectives during this transitional period.

  • Reflection Journal: After completing the activities, the student will write a reflection in their journal about what they learned regarding the transition from the Classical World to the Medieval period. They will consider questions such as: How did Christianity shape society? What were the key challenges faced during this transition? This will encourage critical thinking and personal connection to the material.
