By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the lives of medieval saints, their significance in history, and their impact on culture and religion. The student will explore various saints' stories, learn about the process of canonization, and reflect on the role of saints in medieval society.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to the internet for research on specific saints
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for creative activities
  • List of medieval saints and their biographies
  • Printouts or bookmarks of relevant websites for hagiography

Activities

  • Saints Biography Research: Choose a medieval saint to research. Write a short biography that includes their life story, major deeds, and why they were canonized. Present your findings to a family member or friend.

  • Creative Illustration: Create an illustrated poster of your chosen saint. Include key events from their life, symbols associated with them, and a quote that represents their teachings.

  • Role-Playing Activity: Organize a small role-play where you and a family member can act out the life of a saint. Use costumes or props to make it more engaging. This can help you understand their challenges and triumphs.

  • Discussion on Canonization: Have a discussion about what it means to be canonized. What are the steps involved? Why do you think the process was important in the Middle Ages?
