Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and compare the themes of nationalism and struggle in Virgil's "Aeneid" and Augustan public art, understanding how these themes reflect the values of Roman society and are presented through different artistic mediums.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a copy of Virgil's "Aeneid" (can be an online version)
  • Images or descriptions of Augustan public art (can be researched online)
  • Art supplies for creative activities (colored pencils, paper, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of Roman history and culture

Activities

  • Creative Reflection:

The student will create a visual representation of the "prosperity barge" from Cleopatra's story, incorporating elements that symbolize nationalism and struggle. This can be a drawing, a collage, or a digital artwork that reflects the themes discussed.

  • Comparative Analysis:

The student will write a short essay comparing the themes of nationalism and struggle in Virgil's "Aeneid" and a chosen piece of Augustan public art. They should focus on how these themes are portrayed and what they reveal about Roman values.

  • Group Discussion:

If possible, the student can invite a friend or family member to join in a discussion about the themes found in both the "Aeneid" and Augustan art. They can take turns sharing their insights and interpretations.

  • Hyperbole Exploration:

Students will identify examples of hyperbole in the "Aeneid" and discuss how this literary device enhances the epic style of the poem. They can create their own examples of hyperbole related to modern themes of nationalism.
