Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will explore the concept of food and nutrition through quick and fun art activities. They will learn to identify different food items while expressing their creativity and enhancing their fine motor skills.
Materials and Prep
- Colored paper (red, green, yellow, brown)
- Child-safe scissors (if applicable)
- Safe glue or tape
- Crayons or markers
- Food pictures from magazines (optional)
Before the lesson, gather all materials in one place. Make sure the student knows how to use scissors safely, and prepare a comfortable workspace for art activities.
Activities
-
Fruit Collage: Using colored paper, the student will cut out different shapes to create their favorite fruits. Encourage them to talk about what fruits they like and why.
-
Veggie Prints: Using crayons or markers, the student can color the bottom of vegetables (like potatoes or carrots) and stamp them onto paper to make fun prints. Discuss the colors and shapes of the veggies.
-
Food Group Sorting: If you have food pictures, help the student sort them into different food groups (fruits, veggies, grains, proteins). This can be a fun way to learn about nutrition!
-
Play-Dough Food Art: If you have play-dough, the student can create their favorite meals or snacks. Discuss the colors and shapes as they create their food art.
Talking Points
- "What is your favorite fruit? Is it sweet or sour?"
- "Look at this green veggie! What color is it? Can you name it?"
- "We eat different foods to help us grow big and strong! What do you like to eat?"
- "Let's make a rainbow with our fruits and veggies! What color comes next?"
- "Can you count how many apples we have in our collage?"
