Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be introduced to the concept of fractions through fun and engaging activities that involve sharing and dividing items, helping them understand the basics of parts of a whole.
Materials and Prep
- Hands (for dividing and sharing)
- Voice (for talking and explaining)
- Imagination (to create fun scenarios)
No prior knowledge is needed, just a willingness to explore and have fun with the idea of sharing and dividing things equally!
Activities
-
Sharing Snacks
Use imaginary snacks to practice sharing. Pretend to have a cookie and say, "Let's share this cookie! If I take one piece and you take one piece, we both get some!"
-
Dividing Toys
Use your hands to divide imaginary toys. Say, "Look! I have two toys. If I give you one toy, I have one toy left. We both have some toys!"
-
Drawing Half
Use your finger to draw a line in the air or on the ground. Say, "I made a line! Now we have two parts. This part is one and this part is one!"
Talking Points
- "When we share, we make sure everyone gets some!"
- "Look! I have two pieces. If I take one, how many do I have left?"
- "This is like cutting a pizza! If we cut it in half, we both get a piece!"
- "One part for you, one part for me! Sharing is fun!"
- "Let's count how many pieces we have together!"
