Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of starting a craft business, including identifying a target market, creating a product, pricing it, and selling it effectively. The student will also engage in hands-on activities to reinforce these concepts.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for brainstorming ideas
  • Craft supplies (e.g., scissors, glue, markers, etc.)
  • Calculator for pricing and budgeting
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (if available)
  • Notebook for taking notes and planning

Before the lesson, ensure the student has a clear space to work on their crafts and access to any necessary tools or supplies. Discuss what types of crafts they are interested in creating.

Activities

  • Brainstorm Craft Ideas

The student will spend time brainstorming different craft ideas they might want to create and sell. This can include anything from handmade jewelry to custom greeting cards. Encourage them to think about what they enjoy making and what might be popular with potential customers.

  • Create a Sample Product

Once the student has chosen a craft idea, they will create a sample product. This will help them understand the time and materials involved in making their product. They should document the process to identify any challenges or improvements needed.

  • Market Research

The student will conduct simple market research by looking up similar products online or in local stores. They should take notes on pricing, presentation, and what makes these products appealing to customers.

  • Pricing Strategy

Using a calculator, the student will figure out the cost of materials used to make their product and decide on a selling price. They should consider factors like time spent creating the item and market prices to ensure they are competitive.

  • Create a Business Plan

The student will draft a simple business plan outlining their craft business idea, target market, pricing strategy, and how they plan to sell their products (e.g., online, at craft fairs, etc.). This will help them organize their thoughts and set goals for their business.
