Objective
By the end of this lesson, Olivia will have a better understanding of medieval times, including the roles of knights, castles, and everyday life during that period. She will also engage in creative activities that help her visualize and connect with the past.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or crayons
- A large cardboard box (to create a castle)
- Scissors and tape (for crafting)
- Access to a timer (for games)
- Space to move around for activities
Before the lesson, it would be helpful to know some basic facts about medieval times, such as the importance of knights, castles, and the daily life of people during that era.
Activities
-
Design Your Own Coat of Arms:
Olivia can create her own coat of arms using paper and colored pencils. She can choose symbols that represent her personality or interests, just like knights did in medieval times!
-
Build a Mini Castle:
Using a large cardboard box, Olivia can create a mini castle. She can decorate it with drawings of flags, draw windows and doors, and even use her coat of arms on the castle!
-
Medieval Role Play:
Olivia can dress up as a knight, princess, or a castle guard using items from around the house. She can act out a day in the life of her character, imagining what challenges they might face.
-
Medieval Games:
Set a timer and play a game called "Knight's Quest," where Olivia has to complete tasks around the house (like finding a hidden object) to earn points, just like knights would earn honor!
Talking Points

- "Castles were not just homes; they were also strongholds! They had thick walls to keep enemies out and were often built on hills for better protection."
- "Every knight had a coat of arms. It was like their personal logo! What symbols would you choose for your coat of arms?"
- "Life in medieval times was very different from today. People didn't have cars or phones! They traveled by horse and communicated by letter."
