Objective
By the end of this lesson, Vinee will create a beautiful and personalized cuckoo clock using various craft supplies. She will also learn about the concept of time and how clocks work, including the significance of hours and minutes. This project will enhance her creativity, fine motor skills, and understanding of timekeeping!
Materials and Prep
- Cardboard photo holder box
- Chipboard (light weight + easy to cut cardboard)
- Masking tape + duct tape to reinforce
- Pencil + Scissors
- White acrylic paint (for priming)
- Tempera paint (for accenting)
- Air dry white clay
- Cool temp glue gun + glue sticks
- Large + bright pom poms
- Pinecones
- Cording + ric rack
- Mini garland
- Googly eyes
Before starting, make sure to have a clean workspace and all materials ready. Discuss with Vinee the importance of time and how clocks help us keep track of it.
Activities
-
Designing the Roof: Vinee will cut a piece of chipboard for the roof of her cuckoo clock. She can fold it in half to create a symmetrical design and cut decorative eaves using fun shapes like zigzags or scallops.
-
Building the Structure: Using masking tape and duct tape, Vinee will connect the roof to the box to form the 3D structure of her cuckoo clock. She will also cut out leaves and a bird from chipboard to decorate the top.
-
Creating Paper Mache: Vinee will mix up a batch of paper mache and use pieces of brown bags to strengthen her clock. This will give it a sturdy finish. After the first coat dries, she can add a second coat for extra strength.
-
Making Clay Decorations: Vinee will use air dry clay to sculpt a nest, eggs, and a cuckoo bird. Once they dry, she can paint them to match her clock.
-
Painting the Clock: After priming the clock with white acrylic paint, Vinee can use tempera paint to color the roof, eaves, and other decorative parts of her cuckoo clock.
-
Adding Final Touches: Vinee will drill holes to string cording through pom poms and pinecones. She can arrange and glue her painted leaves, bird, and wings, and add a doorway with shutters using glittery foam.
-
Clock Hands and Details: Using sticky foam, Vinee will create Roman numerals and arrows for the clock hands. She can also add mini pom poms, ric rack, and googly eyes to customize her cuckoo clock!
