Objective

By the end of this lesson, Room 218 will understand how thermometers work, the different types of thermometers, and how to measure temperature accurately. The student will also engage in fun activities to reinforce learning and develop a curiosity about temperature measurement.

Materials and Prep

  • A thermometer (any type available: digital, mercury, or alcohol)
  • Ice and water for making ice water
  • Hot water for the hot water experiment
  • Paper and pencil for notes and drawings
  • Access to a clock or timer

Before the lesson, make sure to explain to Room 218 how to safely handle the thermometer, especially if it’s a mercury thermometer, and to avoid touching hot water directly.

Activities

  • Temperature Measurement Challenge:

Room 218 will measure the temperature of different liquids (ice water and hot water) using the thermometer. Record the temperatures and discuss why they are different.

  • Thermometer Drawing:

After measuring temperatures, Room 218 will draw the thermometer and label its parts (like the bulb, scale, and stem). This will help visualize how it works.

  • Temperature Scavenger Hunt:

Room 218 will go around the house to find places where temperature might vary (like near a window, in the fridge, or outside) and predict the temperature in each place before measuring it.

Talking Points

  • "A thermometer measures temperature, which tells us how hot or cold something is. It’s like a temperature detective!"
  • "Did you know there are different types of thermometers? Some use mercury, while others use alcohol or are digital!"
  • "When we put a thermometer in hot water, the liquid inside expands and rises. That’s how we know it’s hot!"
  • "Why do you think we need to measure temperature? It helps us know if food is cooked properly, if it’s safe to go outside, and even how to dress for the day!"
  • "What do you think happens if we put a thermometer in ice water? Let’s find out together!"
