Objective

By the end of this lesson, Harper-Rose will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction through fun Minecraft-themed activities, enhancing her math skills while exploring her favorite game.

Materials and Prep

  • A piece of paper
  • A pencil or crayon
  • Access to Minecraft (for inspiration)

Before starting the lesson, make sure Harper-Rose has a comfortable space to work in and is familiar with basic addition and subtraction concepts. A quick review of numbers 1-20 will be helpful!

Activities

  • Minecraft Building Challenge:

Harper-Rose will imagine she is building a house in Minecraft. She will draw her house and then use addition to calculate how many blocks she needs. For example, if the house has 4 walls and each wall needs 5 blocks, how many blocks does she need in total?

  • Creeper Count:

Using the idea of Creepers in Minecraft, Harper-Rose will create a simple math problem. For instance, if there are 3 Creepers and you defeat 1, how many are left? This will help her practice subtraction in a fun way!

  • Crafting Table Math:

Harper-Rose will pretend to use a crafting table in Minecraft. She will create different items using numbers. For example, if she wants to craft a sword that needs 2 sticks and 1 diamond, she'll practice adding those numbers together to find out how many items she needs to gather.

Talking Points

  • "Can you count how many blocks you need to build your house? Let's add them up together!"
  • "If you have 3 Creepers and you defeat 1, how many Creepers are left? Let's use subtraction to find out!"
  • "When we craft in Minecraft, we need to know how many items we have and how many we need. Let's practice adding those numbers!"
  • "Math is like building in Minecraft; you need the right numbers to create something awesome!"
  • "Just like in Minecraft, every time we solve a math problem, we’re leveling up our skills!"
  • "Can you think of other Minecraft scenarios where we can use math? Let's brainstorm together!"
  • "Remember, math can be just as fun as playing Minecraft! Let’s keep practicing!"
