Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to play a simple song on the ukulele, understand basic music notes, and relate music to art and physical movement. The student will also learn some useful phrases in different subjects.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 Ukulele
  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Space to move around for physical activities
  • Access to a simple ukulele song (like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star")

Before the lesson, make sure the ukulele is tuned and that you have a comfortable space to play and move around. Familiarize yourself with the chords needed for the song.

Activities

  • Ukulele Basics

Start by teaching the student how to hold the ukulele and show them the names of the strings. Introduce a few basic chords like C, G, and F.

  • Play a Simple Song

Guide the student through playing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" using the chords learned. Encourage them to sing along as they play.

  • Art Connection

Have the student draw a picture that represents the song they just played. They can use colors that match the mood of the music.

  • Physical Movement

Incorporate a short dance or movement activity that matches the rhythm of the song. This can be simple clapping or swaying to the beat.

  • Math in Music

Discuss how music can involve counting beats. Have the student clap in time with the music, counting out loud to reinforce their understanding of rhythm.

  • Art: "Art can express how we feel when we listen to music. What colors do you think match our song?"
  • Math: "Music is like a math puzzle! Each beat is like counting. Can you count the beats in our song?"
  • Music: "Playing the ukulele is fun! What do you think makes music special?"
  • Physical Education: "Moving to music helps us feel its rhythm. How does your body want to move to the song?"
  • Useful Phrase: "Can you show me the C chord on the ukulele?"
  • Useful Phrase: "Let's count to four while we clap!"
  • Useful Phrase: "What colors do you think represent happy music?"
  • Useful Phrase: "How does this song make you want to move?"
