Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create letters of the alphabet using play dough. This hands-on activity will enhance their fine motor skills, letter recognition, and creativity while having fun with a tactile learning experience.

Materials and Prep

  • Play dough (various colors if available)

Before the lesson, ensure that the play dough is soft and pliable. You may want to knead it a little to make it easier for the student to work with. It’s also helpful to have a clean, flat surface for the student to work on.

Activities

  • Letter Formation:

The student will choose a letter from the alphabet and use the play dough to form that letter. Encourage them to try both uppercase and lowercase letters. This activity will help with letter recognition and fine motor skills.

  • Letter Matching Game:

After forming several letters, the student can create a matching game by making two of each letter. They can then mix them up and try to match the letters back together. This will reinforce their understanding of letter shapes and sounds.

  • Spell Their Name:

Have the student spell out their name using the play dough letters they created. This personalizes the activity and makes it more engaging. It also reinforces letter order and spelling.

  • Creative Letter Art:

Encourage the student to use the letters they’ve created to form words or simple sentences. They can arrange the letters in a fun way, making it a creative art project as well.

Talking Points

  • Letter Shapes:

"Each letter has its own unique shape. Can you tell me what makes the letter 'A' different from the letter 'B'?"

  • Uppercase vs Lowercase:

"Did you know that letters can be written in two ways? Uppercase letters are often used at the beginning of sentences, while lowercase letters are used in the rest of the words. Let's try both!"

  • Letter Sounds:

"Every letter makes a sound. What sound does the letter 'C' make? Can you think of a word that starts with that sound?"

  • Spelling Names:

"Your name is made up of letters too! Let’s use our letters to spell your name. What letters do we need?"

  • Creativity in Learning:

"Learning can be fun and creative! How do you feel about making letters with play dough? What other things do you think we could create?"
