Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. They will be able to identify examples of each state and explain their characteristics in a fun and engaging way.

Materials and Prep

  • Water (for liquid)
  • Ice cubes (for solid)
  • Air (for gas, can be demonstrated with a balloon)
  • Paper and crayons (for drawing)

Before the lesson, ensure you have a safe space to work with water and ice. Prepare a fun song or rhyme about the states of matter to help the student remember the concepts!

Activities

  • Ice Cube Exploration:

Start by showing the student an ice cube. Ask them to touch it and describe how it feels. Explain that this is a solid. Then, let them watch as the ice melts into water. Discuss how the ice changes from solid to liquid.

  • Water Play:

Fill a small bowl with water and let the student play with it. Ask them to notice how the water flows and takes the shape of the bowl. Talk about how this is a liquid and how it can change shape but not volume.

  • Balloon Blow-Up:

Blow up a balloon with the student and explain that the air inside is a gas. Discuss how gases take up space and can be squeezed into smaller areas. Let them feel the balloon and feel the air inside.

  • Draw the States of Matter:

Have the student draw a picture of each state of matter. They can draw an ice cube, a glass of water, and a balloon filled with air. This helps reinforce what they learned through creativity!

Talking Points

  • "Look at this ice cube! It is hard and keeps its shape. This is a solid!"
  • "Now, watch what happens when the ice melts. It turns into water, which is a liquid. Liquids can flow!"
  • "When I blow up this balloon, I am filling it with air. Air is a gas, and it fills up space!"
  • "Can you feel how the balloon is stretchy? That’s because gases can change shape!"
  • "Let’s draw our favorite states of matter! What will you choose to draw first?"
