Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to confidently multiply two-digit numbers using various strategies. The student will also develop a deeper understanding of multiplication concepts and improve their problem-solving skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Calculator (optional, for checking answers)
  • Timer (optional, for timed activities)

Before the lesson, ensure that the student understands basic multiplication facts (1-digit multiplication) as this will help in grasping the concepts of multiplying two-digit numbers.

Activities

  • Multiplication Relay:

Set up a relay race where the student has to solve a multiplication problem before moving to the next station. Each station can have a different two-digit multiplication problem. This will keep them active and engaged!

  • Multiplication Bingo:

Create a bingo card filled with products of two-digit numbers. Call out multiplication problems, and the student marks the answers on their card. This adds a fun twist to practicing multiplication!

  • Story Problems:

Have the student create their own story problems that involve two-digit multiplication. This activity encourages creativity and helps them see how multiplication is used in real life.

  • Multiplication Art:

Let the student create a piece of art that incorporates two-digit multiplication. For example, they can draw a garden with rows of flowers and calculate the total number of flowers using multiplication.

Talking Points

  • "Multiplication is like adding the same number over and over again. For example, 12 times 3 means you are adding 12 three times!"
  • "When we multiply two-digit numbers, we can break them down into smaller parts. For example, with 23 times 15, we can think of it as (20 + 3) times 15."
  • "We can use the 'box method' or area model to visualize multiplication. It helps us see how the numbers fit together!"
  • "Remember to always line up your numbers correctly when you write them down. It makes it easier to add the partial products!"
  • "If you get stuck, don’t worry! Take a deep breath and try breaking the numbers apart. It’s okay to take your time!"
  • "Multiplication is a skill you will use all your life, from cooking to shopping. It's super useful!"
  • "Practice makes perfect! The more you practice, the better you will get at solving these problems."
  • "Multiplication can be fun! Think of it like a puzzle — you are figuring out how many pieces fit together."
  • "Don’t forget to check your work! You can use a calculator to see if your answer is correct."
  • "Feel free to ask questions if you’re unsure about something. It’s the best way to learn!"
